Nathaniel Philbrick is the author of the New York Times bestseller In the Heart of the Sea, which won the National Book Award, and Sea of Glory, winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize.


They criminalized the disease of leprosy, and anybody they suspected of having it they rounded up, arrested, and put into the cattle stalls of inter-island ships and essentially shipwrecked them in this isolated prison.
