Blanche Bruce is not a name from American history that is especially well-known. In fact, Bruce has become little more than a footnote, if that, in history books. But Blanche Bruce, who was born a slave in Virginia, went on to become the first African-American to serve a full term in the United State Senate, in the 1870s. Now attorney and writer Lawrence Otis Graham revives the Blanche Bruce story, and shows how he founded a short-lived dynasty, in a book called "The Senator and the Socialite."
