Former Wall Street Journal reporter Asra Nomani, a Muslim, made her pilgrimage to Mecca in 2003, but did so with the knowledge that as a single mother, conservative Muslims would consider her a criminal. The experience, however, inspired her, and she returned to the U.S. determined to confront the sexism and intolerance at her local mosque in West Virginia.
