When the earth shook violently on the morning of April 18th, 1906 in San Francisco, it produced a natural disaster up till then unprecedented in American history. Most of the city was destroyed by the fires that broke out after the quake. But San Francisco was hardly alone in meeting disaster that year. In his book A Crack in the Edge of the World, writer Simon Winchester shows how the events of 1906 changed much more than the landscape.
