As a boy growing up in very modest surroundings in Mississippi, Trent Lott hoped to one day be a lawyer, practicing quietly in his hometown. But circumstances intervened, Lott went to Congress, and, as he explains in his political memoir, he never did get around to being that hometown attorney.
