Imagine a plate of oysters, priced at all-you-can eat for six cents. Or a dozen oysters costing less than a single hot dog. That was the New York of the 18th and 19th century, writes author Mark Kurlansky. In his book The Big Oyster he offers a history of New York through its oysters, which were once harvested by the millions from the then-pristine waters of the Hudson River.
