The latest attempt to make sense of those 17 months in Massachusetts comes from Cornell University history professor Mary Beth Norton. She has carefully tried to place the Salem witchcraft crisis in a much broader historical context, in this book. But three centuries' worth of misinformation about Salem is so powerful and pervasive it even forced her to choose a slightly-inaccurate subtitle for her book.
