Millions of American boys (and girls) have begun their working lives as paperboys. Henry Petroski was a pretty typical 12-year-old boy in the 1950s in Queens, when he got a paper route. Petroski now knows that that paper route was his early introduction to some of the principles of how things work that eventually led him to become an engineer -- today he's a professor of civil engineering and history at Duke University.
