It's been a tough childhood for Andy Brown, the protagonist in this coming-of-age novel. His mother's gone, he lives with his alcoholic and crudely sexual father, and the preacher's daughter is trying very hard to take his virginity. It's a story by Mick Foley -- and some people, even professional reviewers, seem to be having a hard time accepting that Foley, the former professional wrestler known as "Mankind," could crank out a novel like this his first time out.
