The First Emancipator

When Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it was the largest freeing of slaves in our nation's history. But the second largest had occurred over seven decades earlier, in 1791, when little-known founding father Robert Carter freed the more than 450 slaves he owned. His remarkable, and nearly forgotten story, is told by Andrew Levy.
