There is pervasive color-based discrimination in America -- inside the African-American community, where it sometimes said, "Light is right, black get back." Author, professor and poet Marita Golden grew up as a dark-skinned woman whose self-image only improved when she internalized the '60s message of the black consciousness movement that "black is beautiful." Her book is part memoir, part social history.
