Sarah Baartman was a young South African woman who became famous in the early 19th century not because of who she was, but because of what was done to her in Europe. She was brought to London by her English husband, to be displayed as a specimen -- they called her the "Hottentot Venus." And that is the title of author Barbara Chase-Riboud's novel based on the life of Sarah Baartman.
