Benjamin Franklin is an iconic American founding father, a statesman and diplomat who was crucial in achieving independence for the colonies. But long before he was that, he was a scientist. In fact, as Harvard science historian Joyce Chaplin calls her book about Franklin, he was "The First Scientific American."
