In the difficult post-Civil War era of Reconstruction, a Mississippi cotton farmer and former slave owner named Will Campbell fathered a child by former slave Chloe Curry. That child, a mixed-race girl named Georgia, was novelist and playwright Thulani Davis's grandmother. Davis learned the story of her lineage only when she began working on a different writing project. The result is her book My Confederate Kinfolk.
