When American author Jean Sasson visited Iraq in 1998, she befriended her government-assigned translator, a woman named Mayada Al-Askari. And she soon learned that Mayada came from a prominent and highly respected Iraqi family. One grandfather was the Arab commander for Lawrence of Arabia's troops, another was the first Arab nationalist. So what happened to Mayada the year after Sasson's visit was a shock, and is now described in Sasson's book.
