In any war there is a need to explain and justify the slaughter and destruction, for without a reasonable explanation, war is simply murder. Was there such a reasonable explanation for the Civil War, wondered Harry Stout? He's a professor of American religious history at Yale, and his book Upon the Altar of the Nation looks for signs that the Blue and the Gray were aware of the morality of their actions.
