It was a failure, ironically, that led to Greg Mortenson's greatest success in life. His failed attempt to climb K2 took him to a small Pakistani village, where, as he lay recovering his health, he promised to come back someday and build a school. Mortenson kept that promise, and then some. He has built dozens of schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan, deep inside territory that usually belongs to the Taliban or al-Qaeda. Mortenson tells his story in a book called Three Cups of Tea.
