The young, rough-hewn lawyer from Illinois had only one term in Congress behind him when he ran for the presidency in 1860, and beat several much more established, better-known and better-financed rivals for the Republican nomination. But historian Doris Kearns Goodwin now shows how when Abraham Lincoln became president, he shrewdly drew his former rivals into the White House in a move that ultimately saved the country. Her book is called Team of Rivals.
