Roberto Clemente was a hero to baseball fans, without doubt. But he was more than a sports hero. He died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while helping deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Today Clemente is the patron saint of Latino baseball players, although the biography by David Maraniss called "Clemente" shows that the talented ballplayer really was human.
