Stephen Decatur led a short but crowded life, as an early American naval commander and later Navy Commissioner. He died in a duel in 1820, at age 41, a national hero several times over. But in the many years since then, our national memory of Stephen Decatur seems to have faded. Naval historian James Tertius de Kay has now written the first major biography of Stephen Decatur in over half a century.
