Most of what Americans have heard about the war in Iraq has come, naturally, from the American military, or journalists embedded with them. What distinguishes the reporting of Washington Post journalist Anthony Shadid is that he, too, was embedded -- with Iraqi civilian families. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his series of dispatches showing what the U.S. invasion looked like from the other side. His book Night Draws Near expands on that reporting.
