It seems so quaint today to realize that learned scholars of a few centuries ago were convinced that the heavens revolved around the earth. Copernicus was the first to argue forcefully for another theory, that earth and the other planets revolve around the sun. His story opens Joy Hakim's second book on the history of science, The Story of Science, Book Two: Newton at the Center.
